One of the very few African leaders to voluntaliry resign as Vice President was Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, obvious successor to Jomo Kenyatta. He announced his resignation as Vice President on a matter of principle, sacrificing the chance to be president. He disagreed with Jomo Kenyatta and told him frankly that he is going astray by neglecting the poor. As a result of the disagreement, he was isolated in the KANU party and forced to form his own party. He later wrote a controversial book titled ‘Not yet Uhuru’.
